Welcome to the course homepage. You will find all kinds of important information here. Please stop by and check it out from time to time.

For supplemental information about operating systems-related research and thesis opportunities at DEEDS, please click [here].

In this course we will cover SW fault-tolerance from many different angles, especially for operating systems and for wireless sensor networks.

The course is research oriented, covering the latest findings in SW fault-tolerance. It will require active participation in lectures, discussions, exercise sessions and presentations.

The course will have a mid-term exam just before Christmas, and a second exam after the end of the semester. Each student will throughout the course also give a short presentation (in either English or German) about an interesting research paper.

Due to the structure of the course (Vorlesunsbegleitende Prüfung) you need to register for the course as soon as possible! This is also to allow a fair distribution of the presentation slots for all students.

Structure

Lectures:

The course consists of a lecture series accompanied by both exercises and student discussions and presentations. The purpose of the lectures is to introduce the material for the course and the students are encouraged to further study the topics using books/papers/etc.

The lectures take place Wednesdays, 11:40-13:20 in S2 02 | E315. The first lecture is on October 17th, 2007.

Exercises:

The exercises involve discussions around the topic of the week. This requires some input from you as a student, first to give us information on what we should discuss, you can for instance suggest areas that are hard to understand or were not detailed enough in the lecture. Secondly, the exercises are held in a discussion form, meaning that it is a two-way conversation between the assistants and the participants in this course. It is not the "assistant solves problems on the black-board" type of exercise!

The exercises take place Thursdays, 10:45-13:20 in S2 02 | E315. The first exercise is on October 25th, 2007.

Lab projects:

We will offer a set of specifications for small projects soon. The projects will be related to the topics of the lecture and we will offer bonus points for successfully completing the projects. They assume a certain amount of independent work.

The lab projects are due February 1st, 2008.

Please note that all lectures/exercises are held in English. Anyway, beside English, exam questions can be answered in German, too. The same holds for the student presentations, too.

Exam

There will be two exams, one mid-term and one full-term exam you need to attend. Because of the lecture's structure, there will be no re-examination in the fall, if you fail the exams. Beside the two exams, each student will have to hold a short presentation on a topic we will assign later.

The overall points are distributed as follows:

- mid-term exam:  25% (oral)
- presentations:    24%
- final exam:         51%

The mid-term oral exam will take place on December 18th, 2007. Please make sure you register for the course in time!
